Introducing Clive. He looks tough and has a hard exterior, but he’s soft on the inside (pun-tastic!)
Clive is a Hairy Marron (Cherax tenuimanus) a freshwater crayfish occupying a narrow range within the southwest of Western Australia. It is currently listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List.
Climate change poses a significant threat to range-limited species like the Hairy Marron, exacerbating their vulnerability to extinction.
As temperatures rise and precipitation patterns shift, suitable habitats for range-limited species may shrink or become fragmented, limiting their ability to migrate to more favourable areas. This can result in reduced population sizes, decreased genetic diversity, and increased competition for resources, further compromising their survival. Additionally, extreme weather events such as droughts and heatwaves can directly impact these species, leading to population declines or localised extinctions.
To mitigate the impacts of climate change on range-limited species, urgent action is needed to implement adaptive management strategies, reduce the impact of additional stressors, protect critical habitats, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions on a global scale.
